Kyra Lomas Q & A
1. What is the big issue you’d like to be able to solve?
The vacancy and dilapidation of heritage buildings. Particularly in relation to the unused upper floors of our inner-city heritage places and other large-scale public buildings. For me, this is all about raising awareness of the value of historic places and conveying to people that heritage buildings are full of unique and inspiring opportunities - not just constraints.
2. What’s the most exciting place you’ve been to?
My travels have taken me to some exceptional historic towns, cities and buildings around the world but I equally love some of our local places with interesting and varied pasts. My work affords me exclusive access to places in Perth that aren’t typically open for public visitation, such as the South Fremantle Power Station and some beautiful private homes.
3. What is your unique x-factor?
I enjoy learning and sharing knowledge with others. Being a mentor and also a mentee is important to me, which I believe makes me better at what I do through two-way dialogue, challenging of ideas and also through keeping an open mind.
4. Describe your day-to-day role?
As a heritage architect I work with clients to develop scopes of work and documentation to enable them to conserve and adapt their significant places for ongoing and new uses. I am often on site investigating existing conditions and administering building contracts as their visions for their place comes to life.
5. Your outlook for 2024
I’d like to buy a house, but I’m a millennial who enjoys travel, food and wine, so wish me luck. In all seriousness, there are some very exciting and impactful heritage projects being delivered this year that I am looking forward to being a part of.
